Gateway Fellows Internship Program at Rollins College

At Rollins College, inspiration often begins with listening. The Gateway Fellows program is a powerful example of what can happen when a need is recognized and met with intention. This highly selective funded internship initiative was designed to give students access to meaningful professional experiences—opportunities that shape careers and open doors that might otherwise remain closed.

Several years ago, I saw firsthand how many talented Rollins students had the ability and ambition to pursue career-defining internships, but lacked the financial support to take that leap. Travel, housing, and living expenses can create barriers that limit opportunity. That realization inspired me to make a three-year campaign gift to seed the Gateway Fellows program. My hope was simple: to help create a pathway where ability—not circumstance—determined access.

What followed is the true measure of impact. As the program demonstrated its value, another donor stepped forward and established a permanent endowment, ensuring that Gateway Fellows would continue to benefit students indefinitely. This is the power of seed funding—it plants the idea, proves the model, and invites others to sustain it.

The return on investment for students has been extraordinary. Gateway Fellows gain academic credit while participating in meaningful internships that strengthen their skills, confidence, and professional networks. These experiences matter. Research shows that more than two-thirds of interns secure full-time employment after completing their internship, highlighting the direct connection between hands-on experience and career success.

More importantly, Gateway Fellows leave Rollins not just with a diploma, but with a resume strengthened by real-world experience and a clearer vision of their future. What began as an effort to meet a need has grown into a lasting bridge between education and opportunity—one that will carry Rollins students forward for generations to come.
