You have probably heard the statistic: 65 percent of kids in school today will work in jobs that do not exist yet. Education conferences quote it. Workforce panels quote it. I have quoted it.
It turns out the number is wrong. Researcher Cathy Davidson, who popularized it in her 2011 book Now You See It, has spent the past decade disowning it. She traced it back to a defunct Australian website and could not verify the original source. She has not used the figure since 2012.
The number is wrong. The worry is right.
The 2025 World Economic Forum Future of Jobs Report, drawing on employer surveys worldwide, found that 22% of jobs will be disrupted by 2030. Roughly 170 million new roles will be created, 92 million will be displaced, for a net gain of 78 million jobs globally. And 39% of the skills required to do the average job will change in the next five years. That is not 65% of jobs vanishing into futurology. That is almost half of every existing job description rewriting itself before the next presidential cycle ends.
The skills gap, in other words, is not coming. It is here.

What employers are actually asking for
If you read the headlines, the in-demand skills story is all artificial intelligence. The data tells a more interesting story.
Lightcast, which analyzes hundreds of millions of job postings, reports that eight of the top ten most-requested skills in U.S. job postings are durable skills, not technical ones. The top five durable skills are requested roughly five times as often as the top hard skills. Communication, leadership, critical thinking, collaboration, metacognition, and character skills each appear in approximately 15 million job postings annually. Forty-one percent of postings explicitly request decision-making.
Employers are paying for these. Lightcast finds wage premiums of up to 23% for risk analysis and strategic decision-making.
The WEF report reinforces the pattern. AI, big data, and cybersecurity show the largest projected growth among technical skills. Alongside them, creative thinking, resilience and flexibility, curiosity, and lifelong learning are projected to rise sharply through 2030. The skills declining in demand are routine cognitive tasks: basic reading, writing, and arithmetic; manual dexterity; rule-following dependability. Those are the tasks AI does well.

What this means for higher education
If 39% of job skills will change by 2030, and 32% of skills required for the average job already changed between 2021 and 2024 (also Lightcast), the model that worked for previous generations is straining. That model trained people for a job. Today’s economy trains people for a career arc that may span six job titles, three industries, and at least one technology transition that has not been announced yet.
The institutions positioned to win this moment are the ones that teach what compounds.
Specific job training depreciates the moment a new tool ships. Critical thinking, communication, the ability to learn quickly and apply across domains, the discipline to sit with hard problems, the judgment to know which problems are worth sitting with. Those are the skills that survive every technology shift because they are the skills humans use to absorb every technology shift.
I sit on the Rollins College Board of Trustees, and I have watched the curriculum evolve to take this question seriously. A liberal arts education was never really about the specific texts. It was about the practice of moving between disciplines, making an argument and defending it, writing clearly, working with people who think differently than you do. Those are precisely the skills Lightcast and WEF are now naming as the durable ones.
The data that ought to settle the curriculum debate

What students should actually be preparing for
Stop asking what job your student wants. Start asking what problems they want to be in a position to solve in twenty years. The answer points to a different curriculum than the job-title approach.
Pick the discipline that genuinely interests them, because depth still matters. Then pair it with serious reps in writing, public speaking, statistics, and at least one second discipline that forces them to think in a different idiom. Add the ability to use AI tools fluently without becoming dependent on them.
That is not a hedge against an uncertain future. That is the future, on the terms the data actually supports.
