As of midnight October 1st, ports from Maine to Texas have shut down after 50,000 members of the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) initiated a strike for higher wages. Container ships are now anchored offshore, cranes sit idle, and the only cargo moving in or out of East Coast ports is military equipment. Sources involved in the negotiations report that the two parties haven’t met formally since June and are currently 30% apart on proposed pay increases for the duration of the contract.

As we approach the critical holiday season, our industry is facing significant challenges, particularly with inventory levels. Seasonal items like ornaments, gift bags, mugs, and holiday apparel are particularly affected. The shortage will be most pronounced for large orders of specialty items; for instance, securing 10,000 custom-printed red holiday sweaters for a corporate client may prove difficult.

How serious will the inventory shortages be? It largely hinges on the duration of the strike. The shipping industry typically estimates that it takes about five days to recover for each day of port closure. Therefore, if the strike lasts two weeks (from October 1 to 14), we can expect port congestion and delays extending through the end of the year. Additionally, West Coast ports lack the capacity to handle even half of the excess volume redirected from the East Coast, leading to further backlogs and delays there as well.
